TTA for Cranial Cruciate Deficiency in Dogs:
Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA), a surgical method for treating dogs with deficient cranial cruciate ligament, was developed at the U. of Zurich, by Dr. Slobodan Tepic and Prof. Pierre Montavon, where most of the first 150 cases were treated during 2002/’03. Early in 2004 the system was released into a controlled clinical use by 20 surgeons in the US and as many in Europe and Asia. The first dedicated course was held by the end of 2004. TTA is currently practiced by over 700 surgeons. Over 60’000 dogs have been operated on using the original Kyon system.
TTA – advancing tibial insertion of the patellar ligament cranially by a predetermined amount so as to place the ligament at 90 degrees to the tibial plateau with the knee extended – leads to only a slight modification of the geometry of the knee, yet it renders it stable throughout its functional range. Morbidity of the method is low, facilitating a fast recovery to function.
