Blue, green, purple, pink:
They’re more than just colors

Each KYON product comes in a specific color. But the colors aren’t merely decorative. They’re the result of anodizing, a process that protects metals like titanium implants from the effects of corrosion and wear. As such, each hue announces the object’s durability and functionality.

First used on an industrial scale in 1923 to protect seaplane parts, color anodizing is an electrolytic finishing process that manipulates the oxide layer on the surface of metals like titanium using an electric current. The titanium forms the anode (positive electrode) of an electrolytic cell, hence the name “anodize.” When light hits the titanium oxide layer, the light is refracted. Depending on the thickness of the layer, a different wavelength is reflected and is interpreted by the human eye as a different color.

An added advantage of color anodizing is its use for quick visual identification when numerous components are grouped together. This is a huge benefit in the medical world. Colored titanium is also widely used in the jewelry industry.
