Advanced Locking Plate System (ALPS®) Technology


All KYON procedures and implants have been designed with an absolute focus on helping the surgeon to reduce the level of damage to blood perfusion and thus the risk of infection. Advanced Locking Plate System (ALPS®)* technology offers less iatrogenic trauma, greater versatility, increased overall stability, and early fracture healing advantages for animals.

ALPS-I, made commercially available in 2007, synthesized the key findings of KYON Founder, Slobodan Tepic, Dr. Sci., Dipl. Ing., who conducted the research and development on the PC-Fix (Point Contact Fixitor) in the 1980s and 1990s at the AO Research Institute, Davos, Switzerland, into a “biological internal fixation” system. “Biological internal fixation” involves the use of locked internal fixators, which have minimal implant-to-bone contact, long-span bridging, and fewer screws for fixation.[1]

In 2014, KYON Locking Screws (KLS™) technology, a novel thread design and locking mechanism, prohibited from inclusion in the ALPS-I due to PC-Fix patent restrictions, was combined with ALPS® technology. The screw direction is fixed for the larger screw diameter and can be angled through the plate by the use of a KLSTM bead and a 1 mm smaller diameter KYON Locking Screw. Designated compression holes within the plate allow for compression, also by KLS™ bead and screw. High stability and reliable load transfer of KLSTM allows for preferable use of mono-cortical screws where cortex thickness is sufficient to further protect the vascular supply.

In 2014 and 2015, KYON introduced KLS™ technology into clinical use in the Double Pelvic Osteotomy (ALPS® DPO) and Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (ALPS® TPLO) systems. In 2018, a KLS™ compatible version of the Proximal Abducting Ulnar Osteotomy (ALPS® PAUL-II) system entered clinical use. In 2019, ALPS® and KLS™ technology combine in ALPS-II.

As in ALPS-I, the shape of the ALPS-II plate allows for bending in both planes. The plate material is titanium; for the screws, titanium alloy. Finite Element Analysis was used to optimize the shape of the plate for the ideal balance of compliance and strength. Six sizes suitable for small animals, designated by the millimeter width of the plate (5, 6.5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 mm), are currently available. Plate contouring instruments from ALPS-I are compatible with ALPS-II.
